BRACES

Shortest Time For Braces

The truth is that orthodontics is not a one-size-fits all solution. Why is that you might wonder? And there is a simple answer to that- each person’s mouth, teeth, and gums are unique to every individual, making the treatment time different. Our orthodontic dentists at Whites Dental would be delighted to help you create beautiful straight teeth. We provide a range of orthodontic braces near Elephant and Castle, Southwark and London Bridge – these include Damon braces, Invisalign bracesceramic braces and also lingual braces. We are conveniently located in London Waterloo.

Patients with complicated orthodontic issues may have to wear braces for up to 24 months while those with minor problems may complete their treatment in less than 12 months. Let’s have a look at some of the factors that play a role in the orthodontic treatment time-

  • Type of orthodontic treatment – Thanks to the advances in orthodontic technology, there are a few different types of braces available. While traditional metal braces may be a good choice for certain patients, Invisalign clear aligners may be recommended for others. Invisalign treatments are usually completed in less time.
  • Age – Teens and children usually finish their orthodontic treatment quicker and that is because their jaws are still growing and their teeth are easier to manipulate. It’s important to note that this does not mean all adults will need to wear braces for two years or more.
  • Severity – The severity of a patient’s teeth has a major role in deciding how long it will take for them to achieve their desired results with braces. For example, a patient with mild spacing can be resolved in a year or less while a patient with severe crossbite can take much longer.
  • Patient compliance – It is the patient’s responsibility to follow their orthodontist’s instructions closely. If they fail to do so, they may prolong their treatment time.

When will the change become noticeable?

There are a number of factors that will affect the rate at which your teeth will start to shift. Orthodontists typically provide a range because the treatment schedule is set according to your specific individual requirements. As a general rule, your total time in braces should be between 18 and 24 months. You will often begin to notice changes in your teeth’s appearance as soon as four to six weeks from being fitted. However, on average, the expectation is usually 2-3 months.

Why does it take this long?

Adjusting your teeth is done in small steps using varied forces, to maximise movement in the shortest period of time. Essentially, it is done as quickly as possible without doing it too quickly—both of which have their potential downsides.

If the movement is too slow, it can cause root resorption (shortening of the roots). If the teeth movement is very quick, along with higher levels of discomfort, the supporting bone structure won’t et enough time to grow the bone to provide the teeth proper support. This can also lead to an increased risk of root resorption. Rest assured, your orthodontist is trying to get you out of your braces as quickly as you would like to get out of them, but it won’t be at the expense of a healthy bite and a beautiful winning smile. Taking shortcuts or extending treatment can have detrimental long-term effects that won’t benefit anyone. So, while you are looking for the tell-tale signs that your teeth are moving towards that perfect smile, your braces and other appliances will be doing their part to make sure that there is a healthy bite to go along with it. The changes can be subtle that you might not be aware of them at all. Take a picture at the start of every calendar month and compare the pictures, if you would like to keep tabs on the change.

Two years is the average treatment period

“Can I have braces for 2 months?”, many patients ask this question during the initial consultation. Adults are especially concerned about the amount of time they need to wear braces.

The length of time it takes for your braces treatment will depend on how much teeth movement is required to straighten your teeth and correct your bite. However, on average, the typical treatment duration is around two years. The orthodontist can use certain techniques in order to align the teeth faster, but these are usually only recommended for mild alignments and for people with particularly healthy teeth and bone. You can ask your dentist for more information about them, but be mindful that they include a degree of painful alignment. These quick methods typically involve minor surgery to the jaw and can align your teeth in about 6 months. However, the healing process is often painful and not easy to navigate. For this reason, your orthodontist will typically attempt to persuade you to take the easier and more convenient option. If you are determined to speed up the process, however, and are happy to accept the risks and side effects, it may be possible to receive this kind of corrective procedure.

In some instances for those of you looking for a faster teeth alignment Fastbraces, as the name suggests can cut the time you wear braces for in half, this has obvious advantages for many patients, however, this solution is not ideal for all and it is best to arrange a free consultation with our experienced dental teams – either in clinic  at Waterloo or Marble Arch locations or, online via video link.

Braces after-care

Do not forget that orthodontic care doesn’t finish once braces are removed. Whether you have had braces on for several months or three years, your teeth can still move back to their original position if you don’t wear a retainer.
