What Is Invisalign ?
How Invisalign works
Invisalign is just magic. They transforms your smile by using a series of clear plastic trays called Invisalign aligners. Each aligner is custom made for you and aids in moving your teeth ever so slightly towards it’s desired final position. The next aligner in the sequence moves your teeth further along till all your teeth are in their desired positions.
Each set of aligners need to be worn for 1–2 weeks before moving to the next set in the series.
During your treatment, our Invisalign dentist will closely monitor progress, making tiny adjustments to ensure the treatment is going to plan.
What Issues Can Invisalign Fix
Invisalign has become very popular with dentists lately, given the vast range of orthodontic conditions they can treat. These include orthodontic problems such as overbite, open bite, under bite, cross bite, crowded teeth and crooked teeth. Our dentists in London Waterloo & Marble Arch rarely come across a misalignment issue that they can’t treat with Invisalign.
Over Bite
Overbite occurs when the teeth of the upper jaw overlap / protrude much further out over the teeth of the lower jaw – when the mouth is closed. Overbite can lead to problems such as excessive tooth wear, pain in the jaw and gum issues.
Open Bite
Openbite occurs when teeth of the upper jaw and lower jaw don’t touch when the mouth is closed. This can be genetic in nature often. Openbite can lead to issues with chewing food and difficulty in biting regular food items such as apples and pears.
Cross Bite
Crossbite occurs when some teeth of the top jaw sit inside the teeth of the lower jaw, instead of on the outside – when the mouth is closed. Cross bite can lead to excessive wear of the teeth and also chipping. It also increases risk of gum recession, leading to painful gums and even bone loss.
Under Bite
Underbite occurs when teeth of the upper jaw sit inside the teeth of the lower jaw, instead of on the outside – when the mouth is closed. This can often occur when the lower jaw is positioned too far forward. Underbite can cause issues with chewing properly and cause excessive wear of the teeth.
Gapped Teeth
Gaps between teeth occur when there is extra space between two or more teeth. This can happen due to abnormal growth of the jaw bone or teeth size being smaller in comparison. Gaps between teeth can cause food to get trapped in the gaps, increasing liklihood of gum disease.
Crooked – Crowded Teeth
Crowded teeth occur when there isn’t enough space for all the teeth to fit on the jaw – either upper or lower jaw or both. This can lead to some teeth to sit behind or in front of other teeth. Crowded teeth can cause issues with oral hygiene, leading to gum disease and tooth decay.

Advantages Of Invisalign
Invisalign vs traditional braces
Invisalign has become one of the most popular adult brace systems, with both patients and dentists alike, to straighten teeth. The days when traditional metal braces were the most common are long gone.
This is due to the number of advantages that Invisalign offer over traditional braces. First, you can see what your new smile can be expected to look like prior to even starting treatment, using Invisalign’s digital smile simulation software.
Secondly, Invisalign themselves are so much more comfortable and convenient to wear. They are virtually transparent, others won’t be able to tell you are even wearing them. They are also completely removable – you can take them off while eating – that means you can continue enjoying your favourite foods. However, in some instances, particularly in very complex cases, traditional braces can still be preferred, however, these conditions are few and far in-between.
Why Invisalign?
Virtually Invisible Invisalign
Invisalign aligners are made from clear plastic material, rendering them virtually invisible to others while also being more hygienic and causing no irritation to your mouth and gums.
Minimal Lifestyle Impact
Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible – you can attend that party or event without embarrassment. Invisalign aligners are removable, meaning your teeth can continue to enjoy your favourite food and drink.
Popular With Adults
A vast proportion of our adult patients ask specifically for Invisalign. A clear invisible teeth solution that only takes a few months is an offer too convenient to ignore it would seem.
Other Types Of Braces
Metal Braces
Most common type of braces. Cost effective teeth straightening treatment.
Ceramic Braces
Tooth coloured fixed braces. Discreet way to straighten teeth. Popular with adults.
Fast Braces
Fixed braces that work faster than other types of braces. Straight teeth in just a few months.

Types Of Invisalign Packages
Each invisible aligner moves teeth one small step at a time. The more number of sequential aligners that the dentist uses to straighten your teeth, the more teeth movement the aligner treatment is able to provide. That’s how Invisalign works. Depending on the amount of teeth movement needed, Invisalign aligners are often grouped into packages –
Invisalign i7
Invisalign i7 is designed for patient’s that require very minor teeth movement. It’s often focused towards aesthetic needs. The i7 package includes up to 7 sets of aligners to move teeth. Invisalign i7 is not suited for most patient’s looking to straighten their teeth as the teeth movement it offers is minor.
Invisalign Lite
Invisalign Lite is often used when the patient requires minor to moderate teeth movement to achieve the desired teeth alignment result. The Lite package includes up to 14 sets of aligners to achieve straighter results. Invisalign Lite is suitable for about 30-40% of our patients usually – as it offers a material level of teeth movement, but is often not sufficient to achieve fully straight teeth with aligner treatment. Invisalign treatment with Lite package usually has a treatment time of 6-9 months, as long as you wear your aligners as advised by the dentist as per the prescribed treatment plan.
Invisalign Full
Invisalign Full is designed for patient’s with moderate to severe teeth misalignment issues. The Full package includes up to 30 sets of aligners. 30 sets of aligners are usually often to treat most teeth misalignment issues. Complex cases can require more than 30 sets of aligners. Invisalign comprehensive treatment can often take 18 months or more of treatment time with aligner treatment. A significant proportion of our patient’s opt for Invisalign Full to achieve the best teeth straightening results.

Invisalign Journey
1. Invisalign consultation
During the Invisalign consultation either in Waterloo or Marble Arch, we will assess you for suitability, provide you treatment options, discuss likely treatment duration and give you a fixed price for treatment.
2. Digital scan & treatment planning
At this stage, we will take digital scans of your teeth, generate your digital treatment plan and create a simulation of how your teeth can be expected to move during treatment. The digital simulation will show how your smile is expected to look on completion of your Invisalign treatment.
3. Wear aligners & straighten your teeth
Once you receive your aligners, your treatment is well underway. Aligners need to be worn 22 hours a day. You need to take them off for eating and drinking.
Each aligner is worn for 7-14 days and then the next one inserted. Most cases take 6-12 months with correct wear and use of aligner chewies. Complex cases can take 15 months.
4. Retention – keeping teeth straight
This is the most important part, otherwise your straightened teeth won’t last. At the end of your treatment, you will need to wear retainers to keep the teeth in place. You have to wear the retainers overnight, every night.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Do Invisalign aligners hurt?
When you wear a new set of aligners, your teeth can feel tender for the first couple of days. However, this is natural and expected as the aligners are doing what they are meant to do, which is to move your teeth, ever so slightly, in the correct direction.
Q. What can I eat with Invisalign ?
Invisalign aligners are completely removable. You can take them out while eating; and while they are taken out, you can eat anything you like. However, while you are wearing the aligners, you should only drink water.
Q. Will my speech be affected by Invisalign?
For a vast majority of our patient’s, Invisalign aligners don’t impact their speech. A small proportion of our patients have said that it affected their speech a little for the first few days, till they got used to the aligners.
Q. What can I do to look after my teeth and gums during Invisalign treatment?
While you are undergoing treatment, you should take extra care to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy. Brushing and flossing 2 times a day and also seeing a hygienist regularly is something our dentists recommend.
Q. If I loose an aligner, what should I do then?
If you lose an aligner, we suggest you contact us immediately to have it replaced. In the meantime, we recommend going back to the previous aligner and continue using that till a replacement aligner is provided.
Q. How long should I wear my Invisalign aligners each day?
Aligners needs to be work for 22 hours a day, every day, for the entire duration of the treatment. If you wear the aligners less than what’s recommended, your teeth might take longer to move and your treatment might not progress to plan.
Q. What is Invisalign ?
Orthodontists have successfully used removable appliances for years. Invisalign is a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth – it enables you to achieve the smile you have always dreamed of.
The treatment involves a series of clear aligners – aligners that are custom-made for your teeth, to move them little by little each time. Each clear aligner is worn for typically two weeks before being replaced by the next clear aligner in the series, enabling your teeth to gradually move towards their projected final position. Your treatment time and the number of aligners needed will be determined by our dentist, based on your specific needs.
Q. What are the benefits of Invisalign ?
Invisalign clear braces are virtually invisible. Most people may not even notice that you’re wearing them, making Invisalign aligners / braces fit in seamlessly with your lifestyle and day-to-day interactions.
Invisalign are also removable, giving you the flexibility to eat and drink what you like during the course of the treatment by simply removing the aligners / braces. You can also remove the braces or aligners to floss or brush as normal.
The treatment does not involve metal brackets or wires. This usually means that in a vast majority of cases, less time is spent in our surgery for adjustments. Finally, Invisalign allows you to view your virtual results and treatment plan before you begin treatment so you can visualise how your teeth are expected to look when your treatment finishes.
Q. How frequently will I need to come in for appointments ?
You will need to come see our dentist at our London Waterloo or Marble Arch clinics typically every six to eight weeks so we can check your progress and make adjustments, if needed, to your braces.
Q. How many patients are being treated with Invisalign ?
Invisalign is a very popular treatment option for straightening teeth. More than 10 million patients worldwide have used Invisalign. That number grows daily.
Q. Is using Invisalign painful ?
Some patients could experience temporary, minor discomfort for a few days, at the start of each stage of treatment – i.e. when they user a new brace / aligner. This is very normal and is often described as a feeling of pressure. This means that the braces are working – moving your teeth bit by bit, helping achieve the final results. This discomfort usually goes away in a few days.
Q: How do other orthodontic treatments compare ?
A number of other orthodontic treatments exist in the market – these include fixed braces and also other invisible braces such as diamond white aligners. Some also offer direct to home treatment with home impressions and a home impression kit. In our experience, fixed braces are the only real alternative. Direct to home systems can often not produce the desired results and can increase risk of things going wrong. Some also don’t come with complementary teeth whitening kits.
