Orthodontic Braces

Millions of people across the world use orthodontic braces to straighten their teeth. Children, teenagers and adults alike can benefit from straightening their teeth with orthodontic fixed braces. If you are a teenager or an adult, it is not too late to straighten your teeth and also improve your smile. Orthodontist and dentists are now very familiar with teeth straightening needs of everyone, including teenagers and adults.

Why do teenagers need to see an orthodontist?

After the molars have erupted in the early teenage years (except for wisdom teeth), that is when orthodontic braces are the most effective. In some cases orthodontic brace treatment can start earlier, however orthodontists typically wait for all of the teeth to emerge or erupt before trying to direct how the teeth should grow. This is the perfect time to start orthodontic treatment because all the teeth have emerged in the mouth, but the jaw is still relatively supple. As you grow older, the jaw bones grow harder and become more brittle, however the bones in a pre-teen or in an early teenager are still supple, making orthodontic brace treatment easier. This is usually around when someone is 12-13 years of age, however for some it can be 10 or even 15 in some cases.

Why do grown adults have to have orthodontic brace treatment?

Often teenagers miss out on the opportunity to have orthodontic braces treatment in their teen years. As adults, many teens can go on to develop crowded or crooked teeth, cross-bites, over-bites and under-bites. It’s never too late to straighten your teeth with orthodontic braces – even as grown adults. If teeth misalignment issues are not treated, it can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, earaches and headaches. Teeth misalignment issues can also sometimes lead to speaking, chewing and biting issues. Last but not the least, straight teeth significantly improve the appearance of your face and smile, which provides adults a major confidence boost with their friends, peers and colleagues.

Adult orthodontic braces – are they different to those for teenagers?

Adult patients are able to benefit from the exact same benefits of straighter teeth, improved smile and improved oral health by having orthodontic braces. It’s important to bear in mind that as adults are no longer growing, their jaw bones are no longer as supple as they once were when they were teenagers. Orthodontic brace treatment can therefore take longer to straighten the teeth than it does for teenagers and children. Usually an adult patient undergoes orthodontic brace treatment for 4 months to 3 years, depending on the severity of teeth misalignment issues. On completion of the treatment, retainers need to be worn to prevent the teeth moving back to their original positions. Retainers can be temporary or fixed; an orthodontist can advised what type will be more suited for each case.

Types of Orthodontic Braces

Invisible Braces – These  include a series of clear, removable and customized appliances called aligners, made from a type of hardened plastic. Invisible braces are virtually invisible and completely removable – as a result, they do not trap food between gaps in the teeth as traditional fixed metal braces can. A set of invisible aligners is worn for two weeks typically and is then replaced with the next set in the series, till all the teeth have moved to their final positions. Invisible braces have become increasingly popular with adults patients who want orthodontic braces as the invisible braces are near invisible and therefore do not impact their work and social lives.

6 Month Smiles / Fastbraces – 6 Month Smiles and Fast braces are relatively new orthodontic systems that are increasingly becoming popular with adult patients. Their innovative dental technology allows adult patients to straighten their visible teeth in just a few months’ typically. They are both very popular with adult patients as a result.

Damon Braces – Damon is a new orthodontic brace system for teeth straightening. It employs newer dental technology, allowing for faster treatment times and causing less strain to the teeth during the straightening process. It can be had in tooth-coloured ceramic brackets, making the system a lot more discreet as compared to regular orthodontic braces.

Lingual Braces – Lingual brace system is a unique form of discreet braces; it is similar to traditional orthodontic braces in that it has the same components as traditional orthodontic fixed braces. However, the key difference is that a lingual brace system is fitted to the inside of the teeth, not on the outside surface as with traditional orthodontic braces, making the lingual brace system fully invisible. This is the major advantage for lingual brace systems – they are completely invisible to other people. Teeth straightening can therefore be undertaken in a virtually invisibly manner over the entire duration of the treatment. The system is very popular with adults as a result, given adults usually like discreet braces.

Fixed Metal Braces – We are all used to seeing teenagers wearing fixed metal braces to straighten teeth. As you would expect, metal braces are the most common braces that are available in the market. They are usually made of stainless steel material, however, increasingly ceramic braces are gaining popularity as ceramic braces are tooth coloured and therefore more discreet, making them more popular with adult patients.

Orthodontic Fixed Braces – Cost

A number of factors will determine teeth braces cost. The first factor is the duration of the orthodontic brace treatment and the second factor is the type of braces you choose to use. Orthodontic braces typically cost approx. £1,500 to £5,000. Our leading orthodontic dentists can provide a more accurate cost estimate once they have had a chance to examine your teeth.
