Orthodontist Teeth Straightening
Straight Teeth. Beautiful Smile.
Orthodontic treatment is typically used to improve the alignment and appearance of crowded, crooked or protruding teeth. Orthodontic treatment can be had at any age, both in your teens or adulthood. Teeth and gums need to be healthy before starting any teeth straightening orthodontic treatment.
Fixed braces are the most commonly used teeth straightening appliances; they produce precise tooth movement to achieve excellent teeth straightening results. Treatment with fixed braces typically begins once all your adult teeth have emerged and lasts for 18 to 24 months usually.
Traditional Fixed Braces – Metal braces are the most common form of teeth straightening orthodontic treatment. Fixed metal braces are made from stainless steel and also teeth coloured ceramic material; they are attached to the teeth using tooth coloured composites. An orthodontic wire is tied into the brackets using elastic rings to straighten the teeth. Fixed braces provide very accurate teeth movement.
Six Month Smiles & Fastbraces – Six Month Smiles is an innovative new straightening system for adults who want to have straighter teeth in just a few months. It is based on a system of fixed braces, but uses tooth-coloured clear materials making them almost undetectable to others. Fastbraces is also a relatively new straightening system that reduces treatment times drastically. Both system can provide straightening results in as quickly as 6 months.
Damon Clear Braces – Damon are a modern new alternative orthodontic system used to straighten a patients teeth. The system consists of ceramic or metal braces and an arch wire, similar to those used in conventional braces, however the technology it employers is newer. It provides for shorter treatment times and less strain on the teeth. Its ceramic braces blend in with the colour of the teeth, making Damon braces less obvious to others.
Orthodontic treatment using removable braces involves the use of removable aligners and functional appliances to straighten the teeth. Removable clear braces or aligners are a relatively new method for correcting orthodontic issues that are relatively mild or moderate in nature. Invisible aligners (or braces) are the highest profile orthodontic appliances, with wide advertising in the media. On completion of any aligner treatment, retainers are needed to ensure teeth maintain their new corrected positions.
Invisalign invisible aligners are the most popular clear removable aligners currently available. An aligner is a thin clear teeth shaped plastic which fit closely onto the teeth, very similar to a mouth-guard. A series of clear aligners are used to incrementally move the teeth, with each new aligner moving the teeth ever so slightly towards the desired end position, before moving onto the next in the series until the final position is reached. Invisible braces are well suited to adults whose work commitments and life-styles make it difficult to wear conventional fixed braces that are more visible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What can I achieve through orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment has a number of benefits. They include –
- Improve your smile and your appearance overall as a result.
- Straighten your teeth and correct conditions such as dental crowding.
- Correct the bite of your teeth so that front and back teeth come together evenly when your mouth closes.
- Aid with other dental related treatment that you may be needed.
Can you have braces as an adult?
Age is not a limiting factor for orthodontic treatments. Adults can have their teeth straightened just as well. The type of orthodontic treatment can be a bit different for adults however.
It worth noting that certain conditions in adults cannot be completely corrected using braces alone. A combination of treatments may be required – for example orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery may be required to fix certain complex conditions. Also, specially so in adults, where gum disease and tooth decay become more common place, it’s vital to treat these issues before starting any form of orthodontic treatment.
Will I need to have teeth extracted as part of orthodontic treatment?
You do not need to have your teeth removed for all orthodontic treatments. For certain orthodontic conditions however, where space has to be created to correct the bite or straighten the teeth, some of the teeth may need to be removed. Another way to create space for the teeth is to narrow the width of the front teeth. Our orthodontist will need to conduct a detailed assessment of your teeth to identify the best orthodontic treatment for you.
How long will the teeth straightening orthodontist treatment take?
Simple orthodontic treatments can typically be completed in under 12 months. However, more complex conditions can often take longer to fully treat. A shorter course of orthodontic treatment can achieve smaller changes to the teeth structure, which often is what the patient is interested in. On completion of the orthodontic treatment, retainers have to be worn in order to prevent teeth reverting back to their starting positions.
Will I have to wear a retainer on completion of my orthodontic treatment?
You will have to wear a retainer on completion of your teeth straightening orthodontic treatment to prevent the teeth moving back to their starting position. Retainers are either removable or fixed. Removable retainers can be removed whereas fixed retainers are glued to the back of the front teeth. Our orthodontic dentist will be able to advise what retainer will be best suited for you.
Retainers need to be worn regularly for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight. Teeth position continues to change throughout life and is a usual part of the ageing process.
