Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening is a common cosmetic dentistry procedure that’s used to whiten a patient’s teeth to a lighter or whiter shade using safe-to-use whitening compounds. The procedure provides for whiter, brighter teeth, producing aesthetically pleasing results. Teeth whitening treatments are non-invasive in nature, which means, no drilling to the teeth is needed – the procedure is not painful as a result. The degree of teeth whitening treatment results depend on a few different factors – first is the severity of teeth discolouration. Patients with teeth that are severely stained typically show the most improvement after teeth whitening treatment, with easily noticeable results. The second factor that impacts teeth whitening results is the type of teeth whitening system used. Not all teeth whitening systems work in the same way for different teeth types. Some patients can benefit more from home whitening as compared to laser whitening and vice-versa. Different brands can also have an impact on the outcome. Some teeth types can be difficult to whiten using a standard formulation. A dentist will be able to best advise what teeth whitening system is likely to be best suited for your needs.

Laser Teeth Whitening

Instant teeth whitening (often also inaccurately called ‘laser teeth whitening’) is a teeth whitening option that’s available to patients who prefer to whiten their teeth at the dental surgery itself and achieve good whitening results under the dentist’s supervision in a little over 60 minutes. Instant or laser teeth whitening is undertaken by the cosmetic dentist in the dental practice under a white LED light (it is not a laser light); the white LED light acts as a catalyst, helping to activate whitening compounds in the teeth whitening gel applied to the patient’s teeth, thus accelerating the teeth whitening process to a little over 60 minutes. Instant laser teeth whitening is provided primarily by Philips Zoom; it is increasingly popular with busy professionals who prefer to have quick teeth whitening results

In addition to instant laser teeth whitening, Zoom also offers a home teeth whitening option to patients who prefer to whiten their teeth from the comfort of their home.

The procedure requires the application of a teeth whitening gel to the teeth using custom made whitening trays for either 2 – 3 weeks at night or a few hours a day. Home whitening treatments are very effective, producing excellent whitening results for patients.

Philips Zoom Instant Laser Teeth Whitening – WhiteSpeed

Zoom WhiteSpeed is the instant teeth whitening system from Philips. This in-surgery whitening system provides dramatic whitening results instantly. Teeth can be up-to 6 shades lighter in a little over 60 minutes. Whitespeed whitening treatment helps to reverse wine and food stains, stains from smoking and also discoloration caused by certain medication. Patients leave the dental practice with an instantly brighter, whiter smile.

Patients with stained teeth (teeth shade A2 or less) show the most dramatic improvement with the Zoom in-surgery instant laser teeth whitening system, with easily viewable results. Patients with teeth that are not as stained (e.g. starting shades higher than A1) show whitening improvement as well, however, the whitening results are not that dramatic given their starting teeth shade was closer to white.

The Zoom instant laser whitening treatment starts with the cosmetic dentist first conducting a full dental examination of the patient’s teeth and gums in order to identify and fix any issues that could potentially impact the teeth whitening process. For example, decay to the teeth and gum disease can adversely affect the teeth whitening process and experience for the patient. Teeth whitening treatments are most effective when teeth are receptive to the whitening process – a hygienist clean therefore helps to prepare teeth for teeth whitening. We typically recommend a hygienist clean prior to starting a teeth whitening treatment.

The cosmetic dentist will note the starting teeth shade at the start of the whitening process to help contrast it with the shade on completion of the treatment. The cosmetic dentist then undertakes the following steps –

  1. The cosmetic dentist first prepares your teeth and gums for whitening process. They will then apply a layer of whitening gel to your teeth.
  2. To accelerate the teeth whitening process, the cosmetic dentist will use the Zoom LED light whitening lamp to shine a LED light to your teeth. The LED light works as a kind of catalyst for initialising whitening agents in the whitening gel, accelerating the whitening process.
  3. The cosmetic dentist will repeat this process four times.
  4. Once the desired whiter shade has been achieved, the cosmetic dentist applies a post-treatment gel to the teeth enamel; the gel is a protective gel that helps to reduce sensitivity to the teeth.

On completion of the in-surgery instant laser teeth whitening treatment, the cosmetic dentist will provide customised trays and whitening gels for you to take home. The home kit helps you to top-up the teeth whitening treatment when required at home.
