Frequently Asked Questions

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a form of injection of a small gel, typically made of hylauronic acid; the gel is used to fill wrinkles and also add volume to skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid gels very closely mimic natural hyaluronic acid present in your skin; they are injected just beneath the surface of the skin, giving volume, softening and also hydrating the skin. The gels also aid in collagen and elastin organisation just underneath the skin, giving your skin a more youthful appearance.

Dermal filler are a very popular option for smoothening and filling fine lines and wrinkles. You can have them in different parts of your face – e.g. lips, cheeks, around the eye, mouth and jawline.

At Whites Dental, we only use approved dermal filler that are safe, effective and naturally biodegradable.

Dermal fillers – how do they work?

With age, our bodies produce less collagen and elastin – these are compounds that contribute towards having a youthful appearance.  Scientists generally agree that around the age 25 the body starts to lose collagen. Collagen and elastin levels then start to decline at a rate of about 2% a year; the body stops producing collagen entirely in your late twenties.

Dermal fillers are gels made of hyaluronic acid; when hyaluronic acid is injected just beneath the skin, it helps to deliver and maintain nutrients and moisture in skin cells. This helps to restore lost volume in the face and plumps up facial areas, so that the appearance of deep set lines and wrinkles is smoothened, this helping to restore the youthful look lost due to age.

How long do dermal fillers typically last?

Dermal fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid. It typically breaks down after 9 – 18 months. Dermal filler are not permanent therefore; further treatment can often be required to continue to maintain a natural, youthful appearance. Our medical practitioners can provide the advice you need.

Do dermal fillers make wrinkles worse?

Hyaluronic acid fillers (e.g. Restylane and Juvederm) are able to restore volume to the face by filling out wrinkles and fine lines. There is no evidence to suggest that dermal filler make wrinkles or lines worse. In fact, on the contrary, there is evidence to suggest that dermal filler may have lasting effect in reducing fine lines and wrinkle given dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which closely mimics the naturally present hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Is there any downtime with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers treatments usually take 30-45 minutes to complete. There is little to no downtime associated with the treatment, allowing you to resume regular day to day activities straight away.

There is usually no need for allergies testing with dermal filler use given dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid gel, a compound that occurs naturally in the skin. There can be some minor swelling post treatment on occasion, however it only lasts for a few days and can be camouflaged easily with makeup.

There are many bad stories in the mainstream media – will everything be fine?

Dermal fillers have been used to successfully perform millions of treatments around the world. They are very safe and also effective when injected by a qualified medical practitioner.

Dr. Xenia, our primary Facial Aesthetics practitioner, is a very experienced cosmetic dentist and has been undertaking facial aesthetic treatments since 2011. She is very skilled at providing patients a youthful look using the most effective dermal fillers.
