Wrinkles and fine lines aren’t just signs of ageing – brow frowns, forehead wrinkles and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) can also make you look tired and down-beat. Frequently Asked Questions

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are small gel injections, usually made up of hylauronic acid, that fill wrinkles and add volume to soft skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid gels closely mimic the natural hyaluronic acid present in the skin. These gels are injected just beneath the skin surface, volumising, softening and hydrating the skin. The fillers also aid collagen and elastin organisation underneath the skin, giving the skin a more youthful texture.

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular methods for filling and smoothing fine-lines and wrinkles. They can be had in different parts of the face – around the eye, mouth and jawline, cheeks and also lips when administered directly into the lip tissue.

At Whites Dental, we only use regulator approved – safest, most effective and naturally biodegradable dermal fillers.

How do dermal fillers work?

As we grow older, our bodies stop producing adequate collagen and elastin, compounds which contribute to a youthful look.  Scientists argue over when the body starts losing collagen; however the generally agreed age is around 25. Collagen and elastin levels then decline at a rate of approximately 2% a year; the body stops producing it completely by the late twenties.

Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid – this compound, when injected just beneath the skin, helps deliver and maintain moisture and nutrient levels in skin cells. This in turn helps restore lost volume to the face and plumps facial areas, so that deep set lines and wrinkles are smoothed, helping restore the youthful appearance lost due to ageing.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural compound in our skin. It breaks down after 9 to 18 months. Dermal fillers are therefore not permanent – further treatment may be required to maintain a natural, under-stated appearance. Our medical practitioners will provide all the advice you need.

Can dermal fillers be used around the eyes?

Dermal fillers can be used in the tear trough (under eye area) to reduce hollowing and under-eye dark circles, resulting in a rejuvenated and refreshed look. Wrinkles around the eyes can be treated using a combination of dermal fillers, Ultherapy and muscle relaxants.

Can dermal fillers make wrinkles worse?

Hyaluronic acid fillers (for example Juvederm and Restylane) restore volume to areas of the face by filling out lines and wrinkles. No evidence has been found that dermal filler treatments make wrinkles worse. On the contrary, evidence suggests that dermal fillers can have a lasting effect in reducing wrinkle as dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid gels which closely mimic the natural hyaluronic acid present in the skin.

Is there any downtime?

Treatment typically takes 30-45 minutes. There is little or no downtime, allowing patients to resume regular activities straight away.

There is typically no need for allergy testing because the dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which occurs in the skin naturally and is also used in other medical treatments. There can sometimes be a little swelling post treatment, however this only lasts a few days and can easily be camouflage with makeup.

There are so many bad stories in the media – how do I know everything will be fine?

Millions of treatments have been successfully performed around the world using dermal fillers. They are extremely safe and effective when injected properly by a qualified medical practitioner.

Dr. Xenia, who runs Whites Facial Aesthetics, is an experienced cosmetic dentist and has been practising facial aesthetics from 2011. She is very experienced and skilled at providing her patients a youthful appearance using dermal fillers.
