Frequently Asked Questions

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are small injections of a gel like substance, typically made of hylauronic acid, that are used to fill wrinkles and fine lines in order to voluminise and add plumpness to soft skin tissue on a patients face. Hyaluronic acid gel closely mimics natural hyaluronic acid already present in our skin. These dermal fillers are injected just beneath the surface of the skin, giving volume, hydrating and softening the skin. The gel material also aids collagen and elastin underneath the skin, helping give the skin a more youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are a very popular cosmetic option for smoothing wrinkles and fine-lines on the face. They can be administered in various different parts of the face – around the mouth, eyes, jawline, cheeks and lips, in order to give the patient a natural aesthetic looking appearance.

At Whites Dental, our medical practitioners only use the safest and most effective dermal fillers, providing our patients with the best possible outcomes.

Dermal fillers – how do they work?

As we age, our bodies stop producing adequate amounts of collagen and elastin; collagen and elastin are compounds that contribute to giving us a youthful appearance.  There is some discussion amongst scientists as to when the body starts to lose collagen; however the generally accepted age is around 25. From that age, collagen and elastin levels decline at approx. 2% a year, with the body not able to produce them at all by the late twenties.

Dermal fillers are made of a substance called hyaluronic acid; this compound helps to deliver and maintain moisture to skin cells when it’s injected just beneath the surface of the skin. It also provides nutrients to skin cells, helping restore lost volume to the patients face and adds plumpness to facial areas. Deep set lines and wrinkles appear smoothened as a result, restoring the youthful look lost due to ageing.

Dermal fillers – how long do they last?

Dermal fillers are a gel like substance made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring compound in the skin. The dermal filler gel breaks down after 9 – 18 months. Dermal fillers are not permanent therefore – further treatment is required usually to maintain a natural, youthful appearance. Our facial aesthetic medical practitioners can provide more advice on how frequently fillers may be required.

Can I have dermal fillers around the eyes?

Dermal fillers can be used in a number of different areas of the face. This includes the tear trough region (under eye area), where they can be used to reduce under-eye dark circles and hollowing, resulting in a refreshed and rejuvenated look. Wrinkles around the eyes region can also be treated using a combination of dermal fillers, muscle relaxants and Ultherapy.

Can dermal fillers make my wrinkles worse?

Dermal fillers made of Hyaluronic acid (for example Restylane and Juvederm) restore volume and add plumpness to different areas of the face by filling out fine lines and wrinkles. No evidence has been found to date to suggest that dermal fillers make wrinkles and fine lines worse. Infact evidence suggests that dermal fillers can have a long lasting effect in reducing fine lines and wrinkle as dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which closely mimics the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid present in the skin.

Is there any downtime after dermal filler treatment?

Dermal filler treatment usually takes 30-45 minutes. There is little or no downtime associated with the treatment, allowing you to resume regular day to day activities right away.

There is usually no need for allergies testing as well given dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a compound that occurs naturally in the skin and is also used in various other medical treatments. Sometimes, there can be a little swelling after dermal filler treatment, this however only lasts for a few days and can be camouflage easily with makeup.

How much do dermal fillers cost?

Dermal filler treatments can be had from a number of different providers. Some beauty salons provide it as do many medical practitioners including medical doctors and dentists. The cost of treatment often comes down to the quality of the dermal filler gels and the qualifications and experience of the practitioner administering the treatment. We advise all our patients to research the market thoroughly in order to find the right provider. Practitioners with medical related qualifications such as medical doctors and dentists tend to be more highly sought after as they understand the underlying organisation of the patients’ skin and biology in a lot more detail. Given the above, dermal fillers in reputable providers usually start from £200 onwards, depending on the nature of the treatment that’s required and the number of areas that need to be treated.
