Straight Teeth. Perfect Smile.
Fixed Braces are a form of orthodontic treatment used to improve the alignment of crooked, crowded or protruding teeth, improving their appearance in the process. Fixed Braces are also often used to correct the bite of the teeth. Fixed Braces can be had at any age; they can be had as teenagers and also as adults. Prior to starting any fixed brace orthodontic treatment, you need to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy and fit for teeth straightening. You will also need to maintain the health of your teeth and gums over the course of the fixed braces treatment.
Fixed braces are very commonly used for straightening teeth, especially in children and teenagers. They enable precise movement of teeth and achieve very good teeth straightening results. Fixed brace treatments usually begin after all adult teeth have erupted and can last between 18 – 24 months. Some treatments can be completed in 12 months or less as well, depending on the complexity of the misalignment. On completion of fixed brace treatments, some form of retention is required – usually in the form of removable or fixed retainers. Retainers are required to ensure teeth don’t move back to their starting positions after treatment.
Many types of fixed braces are available in the market, all performing essentially the same function. We have noted the common ones as under.
Metal Fixed Braces
Fixed metal braces treatment is the most common type of teeth straightening treatment, especially common in children and teenagers to straighten their teeth. Metal fixed braces are made from stainless steel mostly and are attached to the front surface of the teeth using composite resin. An orthodontic metal wire is tied to each metal bracket, pulled back using small rings of elastic to move the teeth to the desired end positions. Fixed metal braces produce very accurate tooth movements and are preferred by dentists for complex teeth straightening cases. Patients using fixed metal braces need to take care while eating hard foods as the metal brackets can easily come off the teeth.
Fixed Ceramic Braces
Fixed Ceramic Braces are similar to fixed metal braces; however, instead of using stainless steel for the fixed braces, hard ceramic material is used to enable the fixed brackets to blend with the tooth. This helps produce a more visually pleasing fixed brace orthodontic system and is particularly popular with adults. The orthodontic wire linking the ceramic fixed braces is also made of tooth coloured material to further enhance the appearance of the orthodontic system. Fixed ceramic braces are just as effective as fixed metal braces, achieving excellent teeth straightening outcomes for patients.
Lingual Fixed Braces
Lingual fixed braces are a relatively new type of fixed brace system. They are increasingly gaining popularity with both teenagers and adults. Fixed braces are attached to the inside of each tooth, instead of attaching them to the outside surface of the tooth. This makes lingual fixed braces effectively invisible to everyone except yourself. Lingual fixed braces are also just as capable of producing accurate teeth movement and excellent teeth straightening outcomes for patients.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can fixed brace orthodontic treatment achieve?
Fixed Brace teeth straightening treatment provides a variety of benefits. That includes –
- Fixed braces help provide an improved smile and overall facial appearance as a result.
- Fixed braces straighten the teeth, correcting dental conditions such as crowded teeth, protruding teeth etc.
- Fixed braces can be used to correct the bite of the teeth, enabling the front and back teeth to come together evenly when the mouth closes.
- They help with other dental treatments that you may need.
I am an adult – can I have fixed brace treatment?
Fixed braces work just as well in adults as it does in teenagers. Age is therefore not a constraining factor for teeth straightening treatment. Adults tend to be more mindful of the aesthetic appearance of the orthodontic system, given their busy work schedules and life-styles. The type of orthodontic treatment that would best suit adults can be a little different as a result as compared to those for teenagers.
We should mention that certain dental or orthodontic conditions in adults can’t be fully corrected using fixed braces alone. Combination of different treatments may therefore be required – for example for certain complex orthodontic condition, jaw surgery may be required along with fixed brace treatment. Also, adults tend to be more prone to gum disease and tooth decay. It’s vitally important that these conditions are treated prior to starting fixed brace treatment and the health of the gums and teeth is maintained during the course of the teeth straightening treatment.
How long will the fixed braces treatment take?
Simple fixed bracee treatments can often be finished in 12 months or under. However, complex orthodontic conditions can take longer to fully correct. A shorter duration of fixed brace treatment can provide smaller changes to teeth positions, which is what the patient is often most interested in. When the fixed brace treatment is completed, retainers need to be worn to prevent the teeth moving back to their original positions. Retainers can be either fixed or removable. Our dentist can advise
