Fixed braces are used by millions of patients around the world to straighten their teeth and improve the appearance of their smile. Everyone can benefit from orthodontic braces – from teens to grown adults. If you have misaligned or crooked teeth, you can benefit from teeth straightening treatments.

Why do teens need to wear fixed braces?

Fixed brace treatment is typically most effective once all the molars have erupted. This typically happens in the early teen years for most people (true for molars except wisdom teeth). Sometimes orthodontic treatment can be started sooner, however orthodontic dentists in London usually wait for every tooth to emerge before directing how each should grow. Teen years are ideal for orthodontic treatment because all teeth have erupted, yet the jaw is still relatively supple. As we grow older, the jawbone becomes more brittle, but in teens it is still malleable, which makes treatment easier — typically around ages 12 to 13, though it can range from 10 to 15.

Teen braces vs. adult braces – what’s the difference?

Both teens and adults can benefit from braces — gaining straighter teeth, a better smile, and improved oral health. But since teens have more malleable jawbones, their treatment is often faster. Adult treatment may take longer due to harder jawbones. Most adults wear braces between 4 months and 3 years, depending on case severity. Teens usually require less time. After any treatment, retainers are essential to maintain results. Your orthodontist will recommend either a fixed or removable retainer based on your case.

Types of Fixed Braces Suitable for Teenagers

Fastbraces / 6 Month Smiles – Innovative systems that offer faster treatment, especially for straightening visible teeth. These are popular with adults but also suitable for teens.

Damon Braces – Use low-friction technology for faster results with less strain. Available in both metal and tooth-coloured ceramic versions for a more discreet look.

Lingual Braces – These are placed behind the teeth, making them completely invisible. They are effective but less commonly used by teens due to cost and complexity — more popular with adults.

Traditional Metal Braces – Common and highly effective. Typically made of stainless steel. Ceramic braces are a more discreet alternative that many teens prefer.

What is the cost of braces for Teens?

Costs depend mainly on treatment duration and brace type. Lingual braces are more expensive, while traditional metal braces are usually the most affordable. Treatment ranges between £1,500 and £5,000.
