Why Choose Dentures?

Dentures London - Dr Edina with a dentures patient at our practice in Waterloo

Dentures in London are an effective treatment for missing teeth.

Minimise health risks associated with missing teeth – missing teeth are associated with a number of health issues. For example, missing teeth can cause adjacent teeth to shift, impacting your bite and jaw function over time. It is also associated with jaw bone loss, which together can give you an aged appearance. It also causes gum issues. Dentures minimise the risk of many of these issues.

Eat your favourite foods again – eating food gets more cumbersome with one or more missing teeth. Dentures restore your bite and ability to chew as you usually did, allowing you to enjoy your favourite foods again.

Improve the appearance of your smile – have your confidence return with a full smile again. You no longer need to feel embarrassed due to missing teeth.

If you are looking for new dentures or looking to replace an existing one – we can help. Dr Deepa and Dr Ravinder are very experienced denture dentists with almost 40 years of clinical experience between them. They have made hundreds of dentures for patients in London. Book an appointment with them at one of our two clinics in Central London –

Our Waterloo SE1 dental clinic is a short walk from Elephant and Castle, Southwark and London Bridge. London Eye and Waterloo Station are a stones throw away.

Our Marble Arch W2 dental clinic is off Edgware Road and is walking distance from Paddington, Maida Vale, Bayswater, Notting Hill & Marylebone. Oxford Street is just minutes away on foot.

How Do Dentures Work?

Dentures are a removable clinical device used to replace missing teeth. Dentures in London can either be complete or full dentures when they are used to replace all the teeth on an arch or partial dentures when they are used to replace a few missing teeth (the remaining teeth are still present). They are made from strong, natural looking materials to ensure they seamlessly blend in with your surrounding teeth or tissue.

They fill the space created in your jaw due to missing teeth, mimicking the form and function of the missing teeth. They hold adjacent teeth in place, preventing them from moving from their usual positions. Bite and jaw function are restored as a result. Risk of jaw bone loss reduces as well due to the presence of the denture. The benefits can’t be overstated.

Types Of Dentures

Acrylic Dentures

Acrylic dentures in London

Acrylic dentures are made from hard acrylic material. They are often used when a few natural teeth still remain. They can sometimes be a little uncomfortable to wear. Cost effective option.

Flexible Dentures

Valplast flexible dentures are made of thinner thermoplastics like nylon. More comfortable to wear. Suited when a few natural teeth still remain. Virtually invisible to the eye – no unsightly metal clasps.

Post-Fit Care

After the fit, the dentist will invite you for follow up appointments for further adjustments to ensure the new denture has adapted to your mouth and to give you the best possible fit.

If you are interested in having one, but aren’t sure what to expect – here is a step-by-step denture process for more information.

Getting Used To Your New Denture

A good denture is sturdy, fits well and is comfortable. The fitting process is very important – as most take a bit of time to settle in – they can feel a little strange and uncomfortable at the start. As your gums and jaw get used to the new appliance, and you get used to having the denture in your mouth while talking and eating, it will start to feel more natural and comfortable.

On occasion, the denture will require a bit of adjustment to its lining to improve the fit and an denture adhesive may also be needed to help settle it in. In 2-3 weeks time, your new denture should start to feel more natural and comfortable. Its important to note that at no point should your mouth and gums feel sore or make you experience pain. If you do, then you need to see your dentist again for a refit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need dentures?

If you have missing teeth, it’s important to replace them – even if just one tooth is missing. Over time, missing teeth can impact teeth either side of the gap, adding additional strain on them. This can have undesirable consequences – your bite can become misaligned, in turn affecting your chewing and speaking. In addition, missing teeth and bone can make your face look older and saggy over time. You could also lose additional teeth. We recommend replacing missing teeth with dentures or implants. For senior citizens, we provide a guide for dentures for seniors – what to expect.

What are the advantages of dentures London?

They offer several benefits to replace missing teeth. These include – the appliance will enable you to eat and speak comfortably. Your smile will look more natural and full. Your face will sag less. They will also give support to your adjacent teeth, reducing risk of further issues. Good quality appliances are durable, last a long time and are comfortable. For more advice on dentures, we recommend a consultation, which is available online.

Who is a suitable candidate?

Patients who have one or more missing teeth, lost possibly due to decay or an accident, and wish to replace them with a removable appliance are good candidates. Also, patients who are wanting to replace all their upper or lower teeth can be good candidate. Healthy gums and a strong jaw bone are required for a good snug fit. Both young and old patients can be suitable. How to know if dentures are right for you – here’s a guide. We recommend regular hygienist London visits to maintain gum health.

What denture is the best?

A good denture is strong and natural looking, yet comfortable to wear and use. It replaces teeth function and appearance of natural teeth –  for either a few teeth or a full arch of teethIn our opinion, chrome metal dentures are just that. When crafted and fitted well from an experienced dentist, they provide for a strong and sturdy appliance, last long and most importantly – are comfortable to wear. For information on immediate vs conventional appliances, see here.

Private or NHS dentures?

NHS dentures are designed for functional performance, they may not be very aesthetically pleasing or very comfortable on occasion. Private dentures are stronger, sturdies, more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Visit our guide on private vs NHS dentures.

How do they stay secure in your mouth?

Dentures fit snugly in the mouth as a result of a precise fit achieved by your dentist and the dental technician during the initial impressions, measurement and planning stage. They have an inner lining that helps achieve this precise fit. They can sometimes also be supported by a dental sealant that’s applied to the gums and grooves of the denture to keep it securely in place. Some have clasps to fit securely.

How long do new dentures usually hurt?

The entire process of getting new appliances takes 7-8 weeks. Once you have them made, for most patients, it takes time to adjust – usually 2-4 weeks. Dentures should not hurt after 2-4 weeks. Discomfort can be minimised if the dentist and dental technician are able to achieve a precise and snug fit. As your mouth and gums get used to the new appliance, the comfort levels improve as well. The dentist will usually advise what aftercare is needed to help the new appliance settle in.

What are the most comfortable dentures to wear?

Chrome metal dentures tend to be the most sturdy, long lasting and achieve the best fit, providing for the most comfortable experience in our opinion – they are considered the best for an active lifestyle. A denture is comfortable to wear when it fits snugly in the mouth. This snug, precise fit is achieved by the dentist and dental technician during the initial stage when the dentist takes measurements and  impressions and then closely coordinates with the dental technician to manufacture to those specifications. They often have an inner lining that helps achieve this precise fit. Some appliances also have clasps. It takes time for your mouth and gums to adjust to wearing the new appliance and as a result to feel comfortable wearing them.
