Composite Veneers

Composite Veneers are made from a dental composite resin that is carefully sculpted and hardened by the dentist onto the tooth to achieve a desired shape and size for the tooth. Dental composite resin is a paste that is applied to a tooth and sculpted like putty by the dentist.  Once the dentist has achieved the desired shape, the resin is then hardened with a special light (also called light curing) and polished. Composite resins are very advanced and can be matched exactly to the shade of the patients’ teeth, producing beautiful life-like results for patients

Composite Veneers can be applied on as many teeth as required. A full smile makeover can be achieved often at a small proportion of the cost as that for regular porcelain veneers. Composite Veneer are therefore a great alternative to porcelain veneer.

Composite Veneers can be used to fix discoloured, worn out teeth and also crooked teeth. They can also be used to significantly change the shape and size of a tooth. The Composite Veneers process is similar to Composite Bonding, however, it’s used for more extensive reshaping of the tooth. Composite Veneer are less invasive, do less damage to the underlying tooth and are more cost effective than Porcelain Veneer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can have Composite Veneers?

Almost any person can have Composite Veneers. They can be used to do the following –

  1. Improve the appearance of the teeth by changing the shape and size of the teeth.
  2. Change whiten the shade of a discoloured tooth.
  3. Make teeth appear straight and aligned.
  4. Close gaps between teeth
  5. Make teeth larger in size.
  6. Repair chipped or broken sections of a tooth.
  7. To protect the surface of a tooth.

What are the advantages of Composite Veneers?

Composite Veneers are one of the least invasive treatment options available for improving a patient’s smile. As compared to porcelain veneer, composite veneer have the following benefits –

  1. A vast majority of cases do not need teeth to be drilled, making composite veneer a highly desirable forms of dental treatment. As a result, composite veneer are considered as a reversible form of dental treatment.
  2. Unlike a porcelain veneer, a composite veneer does not need to cover the entire tooth surface necessarily. This enables a composite veneer to be an ideal choice for reducing or closing gaps between teeth. A common example is the gap between the top front teeth of a patient, also known as a diastema.
  3. Composite Veneer are easy to repair as compared to other options. Porcelain veneer can break or chip – when this happens a new porcelain veneer has to be made to replace the broken one. Composite veneer by contrast can be easily repaired. Composite veneers therefore, are a cheaper and quicker solution.
  4. Composite Veneer are usually completed in one visit to the dentist. Porcelain veneer usually require multiple sittings with the dentist.
  5. Composite veneers are often cheaper than porcelain veneer.

What are the disadvantages of Composite Veneers?

As compared to Porcelain, Composite Veneers have the following disadvantages –

  1. Composite Veneer can stain more easily as compared to porcelain veneer. Dietary habits of the patient can therefore contribute to the level of staining.
  2. The quality and look of a Composite Veneer is largely dependent on the skill and experience of the dentist that makes the veneer. Natural looking composite veneer require years of experience on part of the dentist.
  3. Composite veneers cannot be whitened using teeth whitening treatments. However, this is true with any type of dental restorations including porcelain veneer. A patient ought to whiten their teeth first and following that have the composite veneer made.

How long can Composite Veneers last?

Composite Veneers last about 5-6 years if looked after well. This is in comparison to porcelain veneers, which can last 7-10 years. How long veneer last varies vastly on how well a patient looks after them. Some composite veneer have been known to last more than 10 years, whereas some porcelain veneer have not lasted more than 3-4 years. If a patient maintains good oral, veneer can last much longer.

Do Composite Veneers break easily?

Composite Veneers do not break easily – they are quite sturdy. However, composite veneer can sometimes chip for a wide variety of reasons – for example biting and chewing on hard foods or hard grinding and clenching of teeth can chip composite veneer. It’s useful to note that composite veneer can be easily repaired – typically in one visit at the dentist. This is unlike porcelain veneer.
