What Are Composite Veneers?

A thin shell of resin on the tooth surface to improve its appearance

What are composite veneers

Composite veneers are made from a dental composite resin that is carefully sculpted and hardened by the dentist onto the tooth to achieve a desired shape and size for the tooth. Dental composite resin is a paste that is applied to a tooth and sculpted like putty by the dentist.  Once the dentist has achieved the desired shape, the resin is then hardened with a special light (also called light curing) and polished. Composite resins are very advanced and can be matched exactly to the shade of the patients’ teeth, producing beautiful life-like results for the patient.

Composite veneers are non invasive and do not damage the underlying tooth. The process is similar to that for bonding, however, it’s used for more extensive reshaping of the tooth.

Composite veneers can be applied on as many teeth as required. A full smile makeover can be achieved in a very affordable manner. They are therefore a great alternative to other types of cosmetic procedures.

Composite veneers in London can be used to fix discoloured, worn out teeth and also crooked teeth. They can also be used to significantly change the shape and size of a tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of composite veneers?

  1. A vast majority of cases do not need teeth to be drilled, making composite veneers a highly desirable forms of dental treatment. As a result, they are considered as a reversible form of dental treatment.
  2. A composite veneer does not need to cover the entire tooth surface necessarily. This makes it an ideal choice for reducing or closing gaps between teeth. A common example is the gap between the top front teeth of a patient, also known as a diastema.
  3. They are easy to repair as compared to other options and are therefore a quicker solution.
  4. Treatment can usually be completed in one visit to the dentist.
  5. They are often cheaper.

What are the disadvantages of composite veneers?

  1. They can stain. Dietary habits of the patient can therefore contribute to the level of staining.
  2. The quality and look of a composite veneer is largely dependent on the skill and experience of the dentist that makes it. Natural looking results require years of experience on part of the dentist.
  3. They cannot be whitened using teeth whitening treatments. However, this is true with any type of dental restorations. A patient ought to first whiten their teeth first with teeth whitening prior to have treatment.

How long do composite veneers last?

They last about 5-6 years if looked after well. How long they last varies vastly on how well a patient looks after them. Some composite veneers have been known to last more than 10 years. If a patient maintains good oral, a they can last much longer.

Do composite veneers break easily?

They do not break easily – they are quite sturdy. However, they can sometimes chip for a variety of reasons – for example biting and chewing on hard foods or hard grinding and clenching of teeth can chip them. It’s useful to note that composite veneer can be easily repaired – typically in one visit at the dentist.

Who can have composite veneers?

Almost anyone in good oral health & mostly straight teeth can have them. They can be used to do the following –

  1. Improve the appearance of the teeth by changing the shape and size of the teeth.
  2. Whiten the shade of a discoloured tooth.
  3. Make teeth appear straight and aligned.
  4. Close gaps between teeth
  5. Make teeth larger in size.
  6. Repair chipped or broken sections of a tooth.
  7. Protect the surface of a tooth.

However, there are some limitations –

  1. Oral health – if you have decay or gum disease, you will need to treat it prior to having composite veneers.
  2. Teeth alignment – mild – moderate misalignment can be masked with composite veneers. Severe misalignment needs braces.
  3. Missing teeth – Composite veneers can’t address missing teeth. Implants are the best treatment for missing teeth.
  4. Crowns or Bridges If you have a dental crown or a bridge, you will need to replace it. They can’t be fixed with composite veneers.

What are the alternatives to composite veneers?

Porcelain veneers, dental lumineers and composite bonding can be good alternatives.
